Which is better, uPVC or PVC windows?

Neither is better, because for windows they are the same material. uPVC means unplasticised PVC, the rigid form used for frames, and it is also written PVCu or PVC-U. Plain PVC usually refers to the flexible, plasticised type used in cables and flooring.

Why does the ‘u’ matter?

Plasticisers are what make PVC soft. Leaving them out gives a rigid, dimensionally stable material suitable for load-bearing window profiles.

What should you compare instead?

  • Profile class under BS EN 12608: Class A needs thicker visible walls than Class B
  • Number of internal chambers and steel reinforcement
  • Glass specification and Window Energy Rating
  • Hardware and PAS 24 security testing
  • The guarantee and who stands behind it

A reputable installer will name the profile system, show its class and rating, and explain the difference between ranges. See our uPVC windows. Wednesfield Trade Windows is a family-run firm fitting TruFrame windows, and as a Certass registered installer it certifies each job against the Building Regulations.

Does uPVC need much maintenance?

Only light cleaning with warm soapy water and occasional lubrication of hinges and locks. Abrasive cleaners scratch the surface and dull the finish, so avoid them.
