Is it worth replacing 20 year old double glazing?

Often yes, if the units have misted, the seals are failing or the frames are worn, but not automatically. Double glazing around 20 years old is usually less efficient than current units, and its seals are approaching the end of their expected life.

When is replacement not worth it?

If the frames are sound and the glass is clear, replacing only the sealed units or the hardware can be enough. Full replacement makes more sense when frames, locks and seals are all failing.

What would you gain from new windows?

  • Better insulation, with modern replacements needing a Uw of 1.4 W/m²K or less in England
  • Improved security with PAS 24 tested locking
  • Less condensation, fewer draughts and lower outside noise
  • A Building Regulations certificate and a fresh guarantee

Does replacement need to be certified?

Fitting new windows is notifiable work, so use a registered installer or notify building control. See our uPVC windows. Wednesfield Trade Windows is Certass registered, so each installation is certified under the Building Regulations and you receive the paperwork a buyer’s solicitor will ask for.

How can I tell if the sealed units have failed?

Condensation or a hazy film between the panes that cannot be wiped off either side means the seal has failed and the gas has escaped. It often shows in changing weather.
