Are there different grades of uPVC?

Yes. uPVC is not one standard product: profiles vary in wall thickness, chamber count, reinforcement and finish. BS EN 12608 classes them, with Class A needing visible walls of at least 2.8 mm and Class B at least 2.5 mm, according to profile manufacturer data.

What else differs between grades of uPVC?

  • Number of chambers, which affects insulation and rigidity
  • Steel reinforcement and corner weld quality
  • Stabiliser and UV protection in the formulation
  • Glass specification, spacer bars and hardware

How do I check the grade of a window?

Ask the installer for the profile system name, the BS EN 12608 class, the Window Energy Rating and whether the window has been tested to PAS 24 for security. A good supplier will have this to hand. See our uPVC windows. Wednesfield Trade Windows is a family-run firm fitting TruFrame windows, and as a Certass registered installer it certifies each job against the Building Regulations.

Does a higher grade cost more?

Usually, because thicker walls, more chambers and better hardware cost more to produce. Only a surveyed quote shows what you are buying, so compare quotes on identical specifications.
