When replacing a front door, do you have to replace the frame?

No, you do not have to replace the frame, but you often should. If the frame is sound, square and the right profile, a new door can be hung in it. If it is cracked, bowed or worn, a new door inherits those faults.

What should be checked on the frame?

  • Cracks or splits at the corners
  • Bowing along the length of the frame
  • Square: measure both diagonals of the opening
  • The condition of the threshold and the keeps

What does a complete doorset add?

A doorset is a matched, factory-built unit, so the frame, door, seals and locking are designed to work together. That usually means a simpler fit, a cleaner finish and one guarantee covering the whole door.

Can a composite door go into a uPVC frame?

Sometimes. A composite slab is typically around 44 mm thick against about 28 mm for a uPVC door panel, so the frame’s rebate must be able to take it. Most composite doors are supplied as a complete doorset for this reason.

How do you decide?

Judge the frame first. A sound frame can stay, and a failing one should go. Our team can assess it as part of a uPVC door quote.
