What is the average lifespan of a uPVC door?

A uPVC door typically lasts 20 to 35 years. The frame and door leaf usually outlast the moving parts, so handles, locks and seals tend to need attention first. Fitting quality, sun exposure and basic upkeep decide where in that range a door ends up.

What wears out first on a uPVC door?

  • Gaskets and weather seals, which harden and let in draughts
  • Handles and cylinders, which loosen with daily use
  • The multipoint lock gearbox, which can stiffen with age
  • Hinges, which may need adjusting if the door drops
  • Sealed glass units, which mist if the seal fails

All of these can be replaced, so worn hardware alone is not a reason to scrap a sound door.

What shortens the life of a uPVC door?

  • A poor fit that leaves the door dropping or rubbing on the frame
  • Dark foil finishes on a south-facing door with no steel reinforcement
  • Low-grade profile, as opposed to Class A profile under BS EN 12608
  • Never cleaning or lubricating the moving parts

When is it time to replace a uPVC door?

Replace it when the frame is cracked or out of square, the door keeps dropping after hinge adjustment, or several parts fail at once. Wednesfield Trade Windows is a family-run, Certass registered firm, so a new uPVC door is signed off under the Building Regulations.
