What are the most common problems with uPVC doors?

The most common uPVC door problems are a dropped or rubbing door, a stiff or failing multipoint lock, draughts from worn seals and misted glass. Most start with hardware or settings rather than the frame, and many are fixed by adjusting hinges or replacing the gearbox, cylinder or seals.

Why does a uPVC door drop or stick?

Hinge screws loosen over time and the door sags, so the lock no longer lines up with the keeps. Adjustable hinges can usually be realigned with an Allen key. Repeated dropping can point to a frame that has moved.

Why is the lock stiff or not engaging?

Gearbox wear, misaligned keeps or a dropped door are the usual causes. Realigning the door and lubricating the moving parts fixes many cases, while a worn gearbox needs replacing.

What causes draughts and misting?

  • Perished or flattened gaskets let air past the door
  • A worn threshold seal can let in rain
  • Misted glass means the sealed unit has failed and the unit needs replacing

When is a new door the better option?

If the frame is cracked or out of square, or several faults appear together, a new uPVC door usually beats repeated repairs.
