How can I tell if my front door is uPVC or composite?

Check the surface, the edge and the weight. A uPVC door usually has a smooth, flat panel about 28 mm thick that sounds hollow when tapped. A composite door has a moulded, wood-grain glass-reinforced skin over a solid core, is closer to 44 mm thick and feels noticeably heavier.

What are the quick checks?

Check uPVC door Composite door
Surface Smooth, shallow grain Deep, moulded timber-like grain
Thickness About 28 mm About 44 mm
Tap test Hollow sound Dense, solid sound
Weight Lighter Heavier

Weight is the easiest test: composite doors typically weigh roughly 35 to 45 kg, against about 25 to 30 kg for uPVC.

Does the frame tell me which I have?

Not reliably. Composite doors are often fitted in uPVC frames, so a plastic frame does not mean a uPVC door.

Why does it matter?

Replacement panels, cylinders and repair methods differ, and composite doors are typically stronger. Your installation paperwork or the label on the door edge will usually name the product. If you are weighing up a change, see our uPVC doors.
