People choose composite doors because they want a front door that looks like painted timber, feels solid, keeps the hallway warm and doesn’t need repainting. It’s the door that does all of those at once. Here’s the case for one, and the case against.
The reasons for
- It looks the part. A moulded woodgrain skin in a proper colour range, so it reads as a painted wooden door from the street. This is the reason most people start looking at composite.
- It’s solid. A 44mm or 48mm slab with a dense core closes with a thud a uPVC door can’t manage. That rigidity is also what makes it hard to kick through and keeps the weather seal tight over the years.
- It’s secure. Multi-point locking anchored into a reinforced edge. Our composite doors are built to the police-backed Secured by Design standard.
- It’s warm. The insulated core gives thermal performance that comfortably meets current Building Regulations for replacement doors, and the rigid slab holds its seal.
- It’s low maintenance. The colour is part of the skin. Wash it with soapy water now and then, oil the hinges once a year, and that’s the job. No sanding, no gloss, no rot.
- It lasts. With that basic care, a composite door is generally expected to give 20 to 30 years of service. Check the guarantee on the door you’re offered; that’s the number that actually protects you.
- It’s flexible. Dozens of designs, glazing patterns, colours inside and out, side panels, top lights and stable door versions, so it suits a 1930s semi and a new build.
The reasons against
It costs more than uPVC, sometimes considerably more. Dark colours on a south-facing door can get hot in summer and need a bit more care (see do composite doors warp?). And for a back or side door that nobody sees, the extra money may be better spent elsewhere.
Our view
If you’re replacing one door and it’s the front, composite is almost always the right choice. Try a few combinations in our door designer and then come and hold a real one in the showroom.
