A composite door is an external door made from a combination of materials rather than one, usually a GRP (fibreglass) skin bonded over an insulated core, set in a reinforced frame. The idea is to get the looks and solidity of a painted timber door without the rot, warping and repainting, and with better insulation and security than a standard uPVC door.
Why “composite”
Timber doors are one material and behave like it: they absorb moisture, swell in winter, shrink in summer and need painting every few years. uPVC doors solved the maintenance problem but lost the weight and the look. Composite doors were developed to keep the best of each. The skin gives weather resistance and a finish that lasts. The core gives insulation and rigidity. The frame and lock block give somewhere solid to anchor the locks.
What a composite door gives you
A thick, heavy slab, typically 44mm or 48mm depending on the core, which is why a composite door closes with a proper thud. A moulded woodgrain or smooth finish in a wide choice of colours that doesn’t need painting. Thermal performance that comfortably meets current Building Regulations for replacement doors. Multi-point locking anchored into a reinforced edge, with the option of doors built to the Secured by Design standard.
Where you’d use one
Almost always the front door, because that’s where looks, security and warmth all matter at once. Composite is also popular for back doors where the door is visible from a garden room or extension, and it comes as stable doors and with side panels or top lights for wider openings.
What it isn’t
It isn’t maintenance-free forever, though it’s close: a wipe down with soapy water and an occasional drop of oil on the hinges is the routine. And it isn’t the cheapest external door you can buy. That’s uPVC, and for some doors uPVC is the right call.
