Can you paint composite doors?

Yes, you can paint a composite door, but it’s rarely the best option and it can affect your guarantee, so check the terms before you open a tin.

The colour on a composite door isn’t a coat of paint. It’s part of the door’s outer skin, applied at the factory and designed to be left alone for decades. That’s the whole point of the product: the finish resists fading, doesn’t need sanding or recoating, and is why most people choose a composite door over timber in the first place. Painting over it means you take on the maintenance the door was built to avoid.

If you do want to paint one

It can be done properly. The surface needs a thorough clean and degrease, a light key with fine abrasive, and a coating made for GRP, uPVC or plastic exterior surfaces. Ordinary wood gloss or standard masonry paint won’t bond reliably and tends to peel or bubble within a season. Use one paint system from one manufacturer, primer and topcoat together where a primer is needed, mask the glazing, seals and hardware, and paint in mild, dry weather out of direct sun. Two medium coats is typical, three for a strong colour change. A south-facing painted door will need refreshing sooner than a sheltered one.

The guarantee question

Most door manufacturers treat repainting as a change to the factory finish, and some exclude painted doors from cover. If your door is still under guarantee, read the terms first. If it’s an older door that’s already out of guarantee and faded, painting is a reasonable way to get a few more years out of it.

The honest alternative

If the reason you’re thinking about paint is that you’re bored of the colour, or the door has faded badly, it’s worth pricing a replacement before you commit a weekend to sanding. Modern composite doors come in a wide choice of colours and woodgrain finishes, including dual colour (one colour outside, another inside), and the finish is designed to stay put.
