Can I fit a composite door to a wooden frame?

Yes, a composite door slab can be fitted to a sound timber frame, but it is usually better to replace the frame as well. A slab-only swap keeps any rot, movement or poor seals in the old frame, and the security and weather performance are only proven for the complete door set.

When is a slab-only swap possible?

  • The timber frame is solid, dry, square and free of rot
  • The existing rebate and size suit the new slab
  • The frame is thick enough to take a modern multipoint lock keep securely

Why is a full composite door set usually better?

A matched frame and door are tested and made to work together. Security ratings such as PAS 24 apply to the tested door set, and a new frame gives modern seals, a drained threshold and a level fixing.

Do Building Regulations apply?

Yes. A replacement external door counts as a controlled fitting in England, so it needs to meet thermal requirements and be signed off by a registered installer or building control.

Wednesfield Trade Windows, as a Certass-registered installer, can inspect the frame at survey and advise whether a slab-only swap is realistic before you choose composite doors.
