Are composite doors warmer than uPVC?

Generally, yes. A composite door has a thicker insulated slab than a uPVC door, so it slows heat loss better, and because the slab is rigid the seal around it stays compressed. On paper a well-specified uPVC door can get close. In a hallway on a January evening, the composite door usually feels warmer.

The numbers

Door warmth is measured as a U-value in W/m²K: the lower the number, the less heat escapes. In England, any replacement door fitted to an existing home must have a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better (or an equivalent Door Set Energy Rating), so every new door from a reputable installer clears that line.

Within that, composite doors with an insulated foam or solid core commonly sit between roughly 1.0 and 1.4 W/m²K depending on the range and the amount of glass. uPVC doors more often sit at the 1.4 to 1.8 end, with the better multi-chambered profiles reaching lower. The figure for any specific door depends on its glazing and frame, so ask for the whole-door value of the door you’re actually buying, not a brochure headline.

Why the difference in practice is bigger than the paperwork

Two things the U-value doesn’t capture. First, thickness: a 44mm or 48mm composite slab has more insulating material between you and the weather than a 28mm uPVC panel. Second, the seal. A door only keeps heat in when it’s pulled tight against its weather seal, and a rigid slab does that consistently. Thinner panels can flex slightly with age and temperature, which is where draughts start.

On either door, lift the handle to throw all the locking points every time you close it. That compresses the seal all the way round and makes more difference to draughts than most people expect.

The honest caveat

Glass is the weak point on any door. A composite door with a large decorative glazed area may be no warmer than a solid uPVC door. If warmth is your priority, keep the glazed area modest and ask about the glass unit’s specification.
