Yes. A well-made composite door with the right locking is one of the most secure front doors you can fit to a house, which is why housing associations and police-backed schemes specify them. The security comes from three things working together: the slab, the lock, and the standard the whole door has been tested to.
The slab
A 44mm or 48mm slab with a dense core is very hard to flex, kick or cut through, and a reinforced lock block runs down the locking edge so the lock and cylinder are anchored into solid material. That’s the structural difference from a uPVC door, where the panel is the weak point.
The locking
Composite doors use a multi-point locking system: when you lift the handle, hooks or bolts engage at several points up the full height of the door rather than at the latch alone. That spreads any force across the frame. The cylinder (the part your key goes in) is where most break-in attempts focus, so look for a cylinder rated against snapping, bumping, drilling and picking. Hinge-side security bolts stop the door being levered off its hinges.
Always lift the handle to throw the full lock when you close the door. A door that’s only on the latch is only as secure as the latch.
The standards
Two names matter. PAS 24 is the British security test for complete doorsets: the whole door, frame, glass and hardware is attacked with hand tools and loading to see whether it holds. It’s a requirement under Building Regulations (Approved Document Q) for easily accessible doors on new homes in England, and the current version is PAS 24:2022. It isn’t mandatory on replacement doors in existing homes, but it’s the benchmark to ask for.
Secured by Design is the police initiative behind the Police Preferred Specification. A Secured by Design door has to meet PAS 24 and further requirements on cylinders, locking and hinge protection. Our composite doors are built to the Secured by Design standard, and we’re a Certass-certified installer, which means the fitting is signed off as well as the product.
Fitting matters as much as the door
A strong door in a badly fixed frame is a strong door you can lever out. Ask any installer how the frame is fixed to the brickwork and what happens at the threshold.
