Yes. The insulated core that gives a composite door its weight is also what makes it one of the most energy efficient external doors you can buy. Every new door now has to meet an energy standard, and composite doors typically clear it with room to spare.
How door efficiency is measured
U-value. The rate heat passes through the door, in W/m²K. Lower is better. It’s the figure to compare, and it should be for the whole door including any glass, rather than the slab on its own.
Door Set Energy Rating (DSER). A rainbow label from A to G, similar to the one on windows and appliances, which combines the U-value with other factors. Band B or better is the level to look for on a replacement door.
What the regulations require
In England, a replacement door fitted to an existing home must achieve a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or an equivalent DSER band (band B for most doors, band C for doors that are more than 60% glass). This has applied since the 2021 update to Approved Document L came into force in 2022. A reputable installer won’t fit a door that misses it.
Where composite doors sit
The dense foam or solid timber core, the thickness of the slab and the compression seal around it mean composite doors commonly achieve U-values from roughly 1.0 up to the 1.4 limit, depending on the range and how much glass is in the design. Some high-specification doors go lower still. The actual figure for your door depends on its glazing, so ask for it.
Three things that matter more than the headline number
- Glass. Every glazed aperture is a weaker point than the slab. If efficiency is your priority, keep the glazed area modest and ask about the glass unit.
- The seal. A door only performs when it’s pulled tight. Lifting the handle to engage every locking point compresses the seal all the way round.
- The fitting. Gaps between frame and wall lose more heat than any door slab. Proper fixing, insulation and sealing around the frame is part of the job.
