Do aluminium windows need burglar bars?

No, aluminium windows do not need burglar bars. A modern aluminium window with multipoint locking and good glazing is strong without them. Bars on a bedroom window can also block escape in a fire, so they are usually the wrong fix for a security worry.

What makes an aluminium window secure?

  • Multipoint locking that fastens the sash at several points
  • Key-locking handles
  • Laminated glass, which resists forced entry better than standard glass
  • Testing to PAS 24, the standard used for Secured by Design windows

Why avoid bars on bedroom windows?

Approved Document B expects bedroom windows above ground to provide a way out, with a clear opening of at least 0.33 square metres, at least 450 mm in height and width, and a cill no higher than 1100 mm. Fixed bars block this.

What if I still want more security?

Ask for PAS 24 tested windows, laminated glazing for ground-floor and easy-access openings, and window restrictors for upstairs rooms where children sleep.

Security is chiefly decided by locks, glazing and fitting, so these are worth specifying at survey stage. Wednesfield Trade Windows is a family-run, Certass registered firm that fits aluminium windows.
