Which type of patio door is better, sliding or French?

Sliding doors are better for wide openings, maximum glass and tight spaces; French doors are better for a traditional look, simple operation and a clear opening on smaller walls. Neither wins outright. The decision depends on opening width and whether you have room for doors to swing. See our aluminium French and sliding doors.

How do sliding and French doors compare?

Feature Sliding French
Clear opening Around half on a two-pane door Most of the width when both leaves open
Glass area Large panes, slim frames Smaller panes, wider frames
Space needed None for swing Room for leaves to swing
Look Contemporary Traditional

Which suits a small opening?

French doors usually suit narrower openings and period homes. Sliding doors come into their own on wider openings, where large panes keep the view open.

Which is easier to keep secure?

Both can be PAS 24 tested with a multipoint lock. French doors rely on hinges and locks; sliding doors rely on the track and anti-lift design, so check both. As a family-run, Certass-registered installer, we certify replacement doors for Building Regulations compliance.
