Are sliding patio doors a good idea?

Yes, sliding patio doors are a good idea for most homes that want large glass, slim frames and no door swinging into the room or garden. Modern aluminium sliders can be thermally efficient and PAS 24 tested. The trade-off is that one pane stays closed. See our sliding patio doors.

What are the benefits of sliding patio doors?

  • Big panes of glass and slim sightlines for light and views.
  • No swing space, so furniture can sit close to the doors.
  • Fewer moving parts than a bifold.
  • Level thresholds are available on many systems.

Are sliding patio doors secure?

They can be. Look for a multipoint lock, a 3-star anti-snap cylinder, anti-lift protection and a PAS 24 certificate for that exact door. Laminated glass is an optional extra that makes breaking in harder. Older sliders with weak track and lock designs were an easier target.

What are the drawbacks?

The track collects dirt and needs cleaning, only part of the opening is available at once, and large panes are heavy, so fitting and support matter. As a family-run, Certass-registered installer, we certify replacement doors for Building Regulations compliance.
